5G Smart Communication Solution for Offshore Wind Power

In 2005, the National People’s Congress reviewed and adopted the Renewable Energy Law, laying the legal foundation for renewable energy development. Enforced in 2006, this law triggered years of explosive growth in domestic wind power projects, marking the entry of China’s wind power industry into large-scale development. In 2015, onshore wind power gradually achieved grid parity. Offshore wind power then became the development priority, with large-scale construction of coastal wind farms across China. Large-capacity offshore wind turbines of 16MW and 18MW were successively deployed.

Shenzhen Comark Technology leverages its full portfolio of industrial-grade network transmission equipment to deliver an integrated wind power communication transmission solution featuring full-scenario coverage, high redundancy and easy maintenance.

Ⅰ. Core Requirements
1️⃣ High networking cost
Offshore optical cable deployment incurs high costs and long construction cycles. Wind farms cover wide areas with dispersed sites, bringing difficulties in capacity expansion and retrofitting.
2️⃣ High reliability
The system requires a redundant architecture. Communication failure of a single device shall not disrupt data backhaul to the control center. Millisecond-level link switching ensures no loss of critical data.
3️⃣ Real-time data transmission
Sensors installed in nacelles and tower bases continuously collect unit data including wind speed, generator speed, bearing temperature, hydraulic pressure and nacelle vibration, imposing strict requirements on transmission latency and stability.
4️⃣ Environmental adaptability
Severe temperature variation inside towers and offshore environments, coupled with high salt spray, condensation and icing, may easily cause short circuits and equipment shutdown.
5️⃣ Intelligent O&M
Offshore transportation for maintenance is inconvenient, pushing up manual inspection costs. Equipment status cannot be monitored timely, and faults are often detected late, missing the optimal repair window.

Ⅱ. System Overview

1. Harsh Environment Adaptation, Hardware-level Stable Protection

Tailored for the severe working conditions of offshore wind power, this solution adopts multi-protection design to improve equipment environmental adaptability. Equipped with industrial-grade components and sealed structural design, the equipment operates stably within a wide temperature range of -30℃~+70℃. Its salt-spray corrosion protection reaches the highest industrial grade, effectively avoiding risks such as condensation short circuits, corrosion and aging, and ensuring stable system operation at the hardware level.

2. Remote Intelligent O&M for Predictive Management

To meet intelligent O&M requirements of wind power projects, the solution integrates the Comark management system. It supports remote configuration, firmware upgrade, status monitoring and fault early warning for front-end industrial 5G routers. Managers can check real-time equipment operating conditions without tower climbing or offshore visits. Once anomalies occur, the system instantly pushes alarms to help O&M staff locate faults quickly. This shifts maintenance from passive emergency repair to proactive predictive O&M, greatly cutting O&M costs and reducing turbine downtime.

3. 5G Low-latency Transmission to Enable Wind Farm Digital Upgrade

Leveraging the advantages of industrial 5G networks with high bandwidth and low latency, the solution meets real-time massive data backhaul demands from multiple sensors in wind power scenarios. High-frequency vibration data of nacelles, tower foundation pressure, ambient temperature and humidity, as well as 2K HD video surveillance signals, can be transmitted stably at millisecond level. It delivers reliable communication support for predictive maintenance and intelligent control of wind turbines, advancing the digital and intelligent upgrade of wind farms.
